The Future: Moving Ahead Together

In this exciting period of growth and advancement, it is important to remember that for the ATO to grow and improve, all of its employees must be committed to moving ahead together.

Of course, since you are just joining the ATO, this is a new and exciting time for you. It will take you some time to adjust to the operations and the environment of the facility where you will be working. To assist you during this period, we compiled a list of actions that will help guide you and bring you up to speed with the new processes and procedures.

We believe that employees should take an active role in managing and advancing their career. We hope that our recommendations will help manage your career during your first year of employment with the ATO:

First Three Months

  • Immerse yourself in your new position
  • Study the required reading, review your training materials, learn more about the NAS
  • Schedule an informal meeting with your sponsor during your first month at the facility
  • Take time to observe the actions of veteran controllers and technicians on heavy traffic days

First Six Months

  • Seek out a mentor in your field to help develop and guide your career plan
  • Begin meeting with your supervisor on a consistent basis to review your performance
  • Prepare a list of motivations about your career
  • Discuss your motivations and challenges with your supervisor
  • Every month take the time to record two major accomplishments

First Year

  • Check if you can schedule local visits to other FAA facilities to gain greater knowledge and understanding of the NAS
  • Gain better understanding of other functions and services within the FAA

Remember…

  • It is your career – take care of it
  • Focus on your current position – be the best you can be on the job
  • Develop a plan for achieving your career goals in the future
  • Training is an important part of your development and will help you grow with our organization
  • Do not be afraid to seek out advice and counsel from your leaders and co-workers

Most Importantly — Enjoy Your Time with the ATO!
